Each year, nearly three quarters of a million tons of phone books go out to more than a million households across the U.S. Of those, just a little more than 100,000 are recycled, leaving an enormous amount of waste sent off to landfills. It’s estimated that, per ton, the cost of recycling phone books is $50 to $75 while disposal in landfills costs between $75 and $100. That translates to around $55 million spent every year getting rid of outdated or unwanted phone books.
Such massive amounts of waste have more than a high price in terms of money — they also cost natural resources, from trees and water to clean air. Producing 650,000 tons of paper also produces nearly 1.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions and requires more than 44 billion liters of water. With the environmental and financial impact that printing, distributing, recycling and disposing of directories has, Yellow Pages United’s decision to stop directory production is one way we can help promote the responsible use of all of our natural resources.
